Streater Community Center

HopeHealth acquired the historic Streater building in Florence, located at 301 N. Dargan Street, in 2018 with a commitment to preserving its rich African American heritage, which dates back to 1904. Through restoration and renovation, made possible with state support, we honor its legacy. To read more on the history of the Streater Building, see the Florence County Museum’s article.

The Streater Community Center serves as a symbol of our community’s strength and history. HopeHealth is dedicated to celebrating this landmark by fostering engagement, empowerment, and wellness for our patients and the community.

Programs at the Streater Community Center:

Veteran Support:
Through the Veterans with Hope program, staff assist veterans in navigating the VA system to obtain benefits and the healthcare system to improve their overall health and quality of life outcomes. The program also offers support initiatives like Coffee with Joe, a fellowship designed to help veterans heal from service-related challenges. Coffee with Joe meets on the fourth Friday of each month at 9 am, where veterans and active-duty service members can enjoy coffee, doughnuts, and guest speakers.

Senior Wellness and Support:
Staff provide specialized onsite navigation services for seniors and caregivers with special emphasis on Alzheimer’s and dementia education and support.  In addition, The Seniors with Hope program meets the second Thursday of the month from 2 to 3:30 pm. Attendees also participate in activities such as games, exercise, arts and crafts, fun, and fellowship.

Grits with Gents is a monthly community gathering designed to foster fellowship, learning, and wellness. This group meets on the first Saturday of every month from 9-10:30 am and provides men with a comfortable and open space and open space to learn about, discuss, and ask questions regarding men’s health topics. The panel discussions are led by a diverse group of experts, including patients and survivors, community leaders, clinical professionals, and mental health specialists. Free breakfast is included for participants, and monthly focus topics include heart health, diabetes, prostate health, and behavioral health.  Additionally, financial literacy classes, family-strengthening workshops, and caregiver support resources are also available.  Onsite staff is available to offer personalized support, assisting men in connecting to primary care providers and staying engaged in their health care journey.
